BURLINGTON, N.J.—Fuji Health Science, Inc. introduced AstaREAL Clear 75, a water-soluble natural astaxanthin designed for ready-to-drink functional beverages for both the food and dietary-supplement industries. Astaxanthin is a GRAS ingredient.
Yasuko Kuroda, Vice President of Fuji Health Science said, "These two milestones clearly provide the market with the opportunity of expanding the use of astaxanthin into both the food industry as well as the untapped beverage market segment. To achieve this we will be introducing AstaREAL Clear 75 to the food industry at the IFT in July"
AstaREAL Clear 75 joins Fuji's other functional forms of natural astaxanthin: AstaREAL L10, a CO2, solvent free extract of Haematococcus pluvialis and AstaREAL P2AF, a cold water dispersible and directly compressible powdered astaxanthin extract suitable for powdered drinks, two piece capsules and tablets.
Kuroda added, "To work with Clear 75 is truly amazing. It mixes with any aqueous system instantly and remains completely clear with no separation or residual film. This is a must to work with."
AstaREAL astaxanthin is a member of the carotenoid family of natural pigments closely related to beta carotene, lycopene and lutein. It is a powerful natural biological antioxidant known for its ability to better protect against singlet oxygen, the most damaging of all reactive oxygen species (ROS), than any other known antioxidant. It is also what gives the pink and orange color to salmon, shrimp and lobster. The most abundant source of natural astaxanthin can be found in the fresh water microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. To provide a supply of natural astaxanthin to consumers throughout the world and to ensure maximum purity Fuji cultivates AstaREAL astaxanthin in fully enclosed state of the art bio-systems in Hawaii and Sweden.

Toyama, 4 Feb 2010 – Fuji Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (Fuji), the Japanese pharmaceutical manufacturing company, announced that it has been recently selected by Frost & Sullivan as the recipient of the 2009 Asia Pacific Product Innovation Award for AstaREAL® in the category of Ingredients for Dietary Supplements.
Frost & Sullivan selected Fuji for its efforts in the research and development of AstaREAL®, the highly potent carotenoid antioxidant called astaxanthin. AstaREAL® astaxanthin has been proven by Fuji to offer a number of health benefits including eye fatigue, muscle endurance and skin health which can be used in the development of dietary supplements.Mr Mitsunori Nishida, President and CEO of Fuji Chemical Industry Ltd., speaks on the development of AstaREAL® worldwide, "It has taken us 15 years of intensive research, process development, and market development to become the most vertically integrated supplier of natural astaxanthin made from the microalgae called Haematococcus pluvialis. This was possible through the collaborative efforts of Japanese, Swedish and American scientists within the Fuji group. The award certainly lifts the group's morale and highlights Fuji's long term commitment for AstaREAL®. The Asia Pacific is an important region for us, so leveraging the industrial recognition will help us a lot in adding brand value for current and new customers."
AstaREAL® astaxanthin, available in both oil and powdered forms has been developed for use in dietary supplements. There is strong evidence from a number of clinically proven studies and human clinical trials to support the fact that the antioxidant profile of AstaREAL® astaxanthin is exceptional when compared to the other common antioxidant products available.
Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Ms Archana Jayarajah points out, "Notably, the firm's AstaREAL® astaxanthin is cultivated in ultra-clean BioDomeTM system in Maui, Hawaii and state-of-the-art photobioreactors in Gustavsberg, Sweden. AstaREAL®'s safety and efficacy is supported by a set of comprehensive studies conducted on both animal models and humans to explicitly suggest the lack of any toxicological finding that renders the product safe and effective to use."
Foreseeing the challenges ahead such as tougher market and regulatory requirements, Fuji's pharmaceutical background proves useful. The company has an efficient information network in place amongst the Research and Development, Marketing, Manufacturing, and Quality Control units which has enabled them to work on the needs and requirements of their customers as well as regulatory needs. Their other goal focuses on increasing global awareness and acceptance of AstaREAL® astaxanthin health benefits through evidence backed communication.

Astaxanthin has been reported to improve dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome in animals but the effect in humans have not been well studied. A recently published study by Yoshida et al., (2009) is the first long-term investigation in humans to show a positive outcome in subjects with moderately raised level of triglyceride. This suggests cardiovascular health benefits with the intake of natural astaxanthin. The collaborative study was performed in Japan among various medical departments of Jikei University Hospital, Chiba and Fuji Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., Toyama.

In this month’s newsletter, we continue with astaxanthin for eye health. Earlier this year, we showed that AstaREAL® astaxanthin intake was effective in people who suffer from Computer Vision Syndrome (eye fatigue by accommodation failure because of near vision work with computers). According to another recent study, astaxanthin supplementation may help a similar accommodation problem which develops with age rather than accumulative effects of computer screen use. This is known as age-related accommodation loss and impacts the quality of near vision especially for pre-retirees or Baby-boomer generation.

New findings by Aoi et al., 2008 revealed new insights into the mechanism of action behind increased endurance and enhanced fat metabolism in mice model study. Astaxanthin treated group accelerated body fat reduction of "fat-burning" when combined with exercise compared to just exercise alone. The authors suggested enhanced CPT I activity and less ROS damage because astaxanthin protected muscle mitochondria during energy production.

Results of two important studies were presented at the 21st Annual Meeting on Carotenoid Research, Osaka University, 6-7 September 2007. First, researchers of Fuji's Institute for Food Science Research revealed a new method to asess the antioxidant property such as singlet oxygen quenching activity for water soluble and lipid soluble antioxidants. Astaxanthin by far had the greatest singlet oxygen quenching ability when compared against well known antioxidants. Second, Professor Yazawa of Tokyo University of Marine Science & Technology showed in mice models that AstaREAL Astaxanthin in combination with exercise had the greatest inhibitory effect against weight gain on diets high in fat.
